Charity

Charity is one of the distinguishing characteristics of Freemasonry, which is the UK’s single largest donor to charity after the National Lottery.  Freemasons are encouraged to provide charitable support in the widest sense and in London we achieve this in a number of ways:

  • By supporting the national Masonic charities which provide financial and other support through national projects and to individuals in need
  • Through raising funds for the London Masonic Charitable Trust – which makes donations to non Masonic charities, especially where there is a benefit to the London community
  • By individual lodges raising funds for specific local charities thereby providing benefits for the local community in which they are based.

Freemasons recognise that many charities require regular and consistent support if they are to survive and flourish in harsh economic times, when the demand for their activities can rise.  Thus over many years we have established long-term relationships with some particular charities. For example London Masons have donated over £500,000 to London hospices (over £7.5 million nationally); over £26,000 to the London air ambulance (over £550,000 nationally); to Cancer Research (£1million over 10 years) and more than £1.8 million to Disaster Relief worldwide (such as the recent flooding in Southern India, where some of our members, their families and immediate communities have come from).

All of the funds disbursed by the Masonic charities are raised directly by local Lodge members and their families. No contributions are collected from the public.

The links below take you to the four national Masonic charities’ websites which explain their work in more detail and the way in which to apply for support from them.
